September 13, 20, 27 and October 4, 1:00 - 3:00pm

You may have seen the lovely pieces Diana created after learning this technique at Seminar 2017. Come to this class and learn how you can create your own stitched masterpiece using a favourite photograph as inspiration. You will supply an original photo of a landscape (no animals or people). If the photo is not your own, you will need to have the permission of the photographer. The picture will be replicated with thread on silk fabric, using simple stitches. Colours and shading are the most important part.

Bring your printed colour photograph (4” x 6” recommended), a 10” hoop with the inner ring bound, a 4” hoop, notebook, pencil, eraser, small ruler, scissors, #5 or #6 crewel needles, and DMC floss to match your picture. Your kit will contain the silk background fabric, cotton fabric, practice cloth, dressmaker’s carbon and tracing paper. Specialty threads from the teacher’s stash and the guild stash of threads will also be available. If you are unsure about whether your photo is suitable, bring more than one and Diana will help you decide which one to stitch.

This class is not suitable for a novice stitcher. Some experience with colour and shading is also preferred.

September 20 & 27, 9:30 - 11:30 am

Do you have stitched pieces that you don’t want to frame but you don’t know how to finish the edges? If so, this is the perfect class for you. Come and learn how to do two simple edge stitches that you can use to finish your linen embroideries.

You will work on a piece of linen that will be finished as a bookmark. The long edges will be finished with a Scandinavian three-sided stitch and the short edges with a fringed hemstitch. There may be a small amount of homework between classes if you are not able to complete the preliminary step during the first class. Once your edges are finished, you can leave the bookmark blank or you can add your own personalized design in any technique that you like.

The kit will contain a 4”x12” piece of linen, threads and a tapestry needle. Bring your basic sewing kit including basting thread.

NOTE: This class is full.

October 4, 9:30 - 11:30 am

This class will give you a taste of Brazilian embroidery. You will learn to embroider a small floral design that will be finished as a covered button. Your kit will include fabric and threads to make two buttons. You will also receive a covered button kit that includes three 1-1/8 inch buttons. Just bring a 4-inch hoop and your basic sewing kit. If buttons aren't your thing, you could easily finish this as a needle minder by adding your own magnet.

October 18, 25, November 1, 8 and 22   1:00 - 3:00 pm

This whitework project features 15 pulled-thread designs that will be worked on 28-count white linen and that can be finished as a biscornu or a sampler. We will focus on learning three or four pulled thread stitches in each class so that you can master each one successfully. Pre-work and homework will be required to prepare the squares for the pulled thread stitches. You will need to do a satin stitch and back stitch border for three or four of the 1.5” squares prior to each class, including the first class.

Your kit will contain a 14”x19” piece of linen and a needle. If you already have pearl cotton (#8 and #12, preferably white), you can use that. Optionally, you can request that threads be added to your kit at an additional cost of $6. Instructions for each pulled thread stitch used in this project will need to be downloaded and printed by each student.

You should have some experience reading patterns and have done some type of counted thread work to enroll in this class. Previous pulled thread experience is not required. If you are planning to do the biscornu, you can sign up for the finishing class that will be held immediately following this class.

A meeting will be held at 11:30 on Thursday, October 4 to explain the pre-work. Bring your copy of the instructions, basting thread and your pearl cotton if you are providing your own. You will receive the rest of your kit at this meeting.

For those who would like to do cross stitch, information on where to download a free pattern for 15 squares that you need for the biscornu will be given at time of registration. You will need to complete all of your stitching prior to the first class. Other options for finishing your 15-square project will also be discussed.
