From Fabric to Fabulous - Bead Workshop with Marian Preshing

Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27, 2019, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

 OTFall2019MPpartiallyembellished

Some of you may have met Marian when she visited the guild this spring. You may also have noticed the beautiful beaded bag, needlebook and tissue holder that she had with her. Those of us who saw it fell in love with the fabric and the beading. Marian offered to hold a workshop on the technique at our guild. Luckily for us, Marian will be coming back to Montreal to teach a group of Japanese embroidery students this fall, so we are going to take advantage of this and have her spend a couple of days with us. And we lucked out a second time when Marian was able to find a source for the same fabric she used on her bag.

In this two-day workshop, students will start with purple and blue dyed batik fabric with a pattern of silver swirls and black stars and will apply beads using Japanese-style bead embroidery techniques and finish with either an 8" x 5½" needlebook or a 7" x 5½" purse-sized tissue holder. This workshop is suitable for all levels of stitchers.

Your kit will include:

- two 8" x 10" pieces of fabric (Winter's Magic Bali Batiks in huckleberry by Gwen Carreon for Hoffman): one piece for stitching and the other for lining

- bead needle, sewing needle

- sewing thread in grey, purple, blue and black

- size 10, 11, 13 silver seed beads for swirls; hematite beads for stars

- mix of 30 different beads for enhancing background batik

- written instructions for beading

- 5" circle of moose hide for bead tray

Students will supply:

- 4" to 5" flat bottom plastic lid with ¼" high sides for a bead tray

- cotton fabric in a solid white or light colour, mounted (with thumb tacks or staples) onto either stretcher bars or embroidery hoop to support one of the 8" x 10" pieces of batik fabric to be hand sewn to mounting fabric by student

- scissors

- optional item: clamp device to hold frame to table to work with both hands. If no clamp used, you may lean project onto table edge from your lap.

- needle threaders and magnifying glasses as required
